Wired trying to be the new Make Magazine – Break Magazine where you spend quality time on something that doesn’t really work. Obviously don’t know how cameras work.
12.6.2008
Finally! A camera that is portable and takes excellent photos!
12.6.2008
But… you already HAD a camera to take pics of this thing!
12.6.2008
Wired apparently failed at it, but the folks at the Make blog appear to have made it work just fine (you can find a link to their blog, with detailed instructions on making this thing work, in the linked article). That being said, I definitely want to do this now. With the scanner properly modified (the Make guide includes instructions for this) the whole assembly basically becomes a really cheap scanning back (these things will normally run you thousands of dollars, albeit generally at higher resolutions and better quality). I’d really love to see what this thing could do attached to a view camera, or even just with an actual lens attached to the front.
12.6.2008
title should be ‘how NOT to make a scanner camera’
12.6.2008
Or you could just buy a camera……..
12.6.2008
Here I’m going to take a picture of you… Wait… wait… wait… wait… don’t move… wait… okay… yeah just… stay… stay there… don’t move… okay… okay… wait… theeeeere you go! Ahh you blinked, let’s take another one…

Now, make a scanner out of a camera!
12.6.2008
My brother did an entire portfolio using this type of camera a few years ago. It looked like hell, but some of the pictures he took were crazy
12.6.2008
If your thinking of trying this. You need a tiny aperture and something you can focus with, if you don’t own an old lens then buy one they are very cheap, look for maybe a 20mm, it won’t cover the whole scanner plane though and focusing will take practice.

When I first read the title, I thought it was referring to scanner photography (basically, placing object on/near your flatbed scanner to create incredibly detailed hi-res images). flickr.com/groups/49136327@N00/

12.6.2008
My Canon LIDE25 was jamming up on me (I barely used the thing much), canon jerks wouldn’t repair it so I ripped it apart and fixed it myself. This guy just wasted a perfectly good scanner.
12.6.2008
Slow day at Wired.
12.6.2008
I’ive been trying to do this for a while now. Just havent had the time or money to go and get some supplies. All you really need is a good tripod, a piece of glass and some good lights with filters. I’ve done some tests just on a small tripod with minimal lighting and the results are encouraging. The reason I want this is because sometimes there are many, many documents you want to scan and it takes forever even on the fastest scanners. Whereas with the camera, the setups and picture taking is much faster. The only real problem I’m thinking about is how most cameras automatically compress the image taken (via JPEG or other lossy format). So while it’s great for pictures it might not be so good for things like text. Although the text shots I took turned out pretty good.
12.6.2008
God, what a waste of time, the oatmeal-box camera was easier and cooler than this ***** mchsitster
12.6.2008
The only reason I can think of for this is interesting pictures of moving scenes.
12.6.2008
I can’t wait to read his tutorial on making a rocket ship to the moon that explodes before leaving the ground!
12.6.2008
I think it’s humour? Kinda like an assy reply to the people who hated him for telling people to throw away their scanners.I lol’d at the concept though.
12.6.2008
And for the people who are EXTREMELY bored we will show you how to make a kaleidoscope out of a digital camera! Amuse your friends for hours!

Wow. I’d like to see some ***** tool carrying that bitch around pointing it at *****.He’d probably be indian.
12.6.2008
Golembewski’s scanner camera project website is the place to find out how to create one of these things. Digg is apparently the place to learn how to act like an idiot, if you go by some of these comments. Making the camera and figuring out how to get images is both a technical and artistic endeavor. If you just want to take a picture, use your point-and-shoot. Check out flickr for “scanner camera” and “ground glass” and you’ll see why some people are into the alternative image.

Lol. How to NOT make a scanner cam.. what a total waste of bandwidth and time..
