Poken: The Future of Social Networking?
At a conference … last week in Amsterdam the first Pokens were given away to participants. A Poken is a small gadget you can keep on your key chain. When touching someone else’s Poken you automatically exchange ‘business cards’ and links to your social network profiles on LinkedIn and Facebook. Is this the future of social networking?

Yes future of social networking for 12 year olds. This thing looks like a Tomagachi pet. They need to redesign these if they want this to be ANYTHING beyond a kids toy.

When it comes to women, I’d like to do more than just swap business cards and profile links…

I’d like to suggest a button on a Poken that enables this sharing. The idea is that in addition to touching, both parties have to enable their respective transceivers for the exchange to occur.

QR Codes > Poken, some phones already have QR Code readers in the US but its mostly used in Japan. It will hopefully be here soon.

Unfortunate name for a limitedly useful device. May become a short lived fad but It will not reach critical mass. Its functionality will quickly be replaced by inclusion in more convenient and professionally acceptable devices such as cell phones or RFID enabled business cards.

They sell them in 12 packs… Anyone want to get in on this with me?

If you Did NOT like the name POKEN, DIGG.

I had an idea like this a while back. Too bad I never capitalized on it.

The last thing I need is a real-life equivalent of "You got superpoked!"

Yes the pickup lines for this are infinite."So would you like to poke now or poke later?""Is that a Poken in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?""Nice shoes, want to Poke?""If I poked you now would you hold it against me?""Poke Me, baby.""I want to poke you."

Infinite… yet so lame.

So can I just stand next to someone with a Poken and instantly be their friend?
12.10.2008
No, you really have to make both Pokens touch each others hands.
12.10.2008
So can I inappropriately rub myself against someone and then be their friend?

I signed up, linked to my Facebook… went to order a Poken Pack (12 poken devices) and it said that it would cost me $180 USD (with shipping)Uh, that right there is going to limit its adoption here.
12.10.2008
Do they only come in big packs? One or two should be enough for most people.
12.10.2008
But will they blend?

I like the idea. However it might be better to make this a bit more professional and less kiddy. Perhaps make rings that do the same thing, a wearable instead of a keychain fob. When you shake someones hand you add them to your Facebook and Linkedin as an acquaintance.

This is gay as hell.

Dude, show me your Poken!
