Facebook and the downsides of software as a service

Change == Complaining.

facebook is for eunuchs
3.28.2009
Enough about the bloody Facebook redesign already.
3.28.2009
But sometimes it’s interesting to read an approach from an academic perspective. I’m glad to see that it doesn’t demonize either the users or programmers.

I find it amusing that people are all bitching about some website redesign..I wonder if they really have a social life. See, I don’t know what the ***** facebook looked like since I just joined like a week ago cause I was bored with my cell phone while being drunk so I created a account. Its still under construction. Some people just need to get a life or grow one.
3.28.2009
I know that I personally rely on services such as facebook and twitter. You may think my social life pales in comparison to your own because I don’t get drunk and play on my phone, but that’s just your opinion.Currently, I’m using it to keep my friends and family updated on the status of my 3 month old son at Riley Hospital for Children. If I had to do this without these services, I’d never be off the phone, thus wouldn’t be able to spend as much time with my wife, son, and other 2 kids.tl;dr not everyone uses it like you do
3.28.2009
The best thing you could do whilst you were drunk was create an account on facebook ? Looks like you are the one who needs to "get a life or grow one"

The scandalous network

A heap of ***** is still a heap of *****, no matter how you dress it up (or down).
3.28.2009
Whats with BSG thumbnail? Facebook developers are cylon? or because it is some kind o *network*ing?

On a more serious subject, Wii, 360 or PS3 – which one should I get? I’m leaning towards PS3 ‘cuz of RE5 and GoW3. Opinions?
3.28.2009
PS3
3.28.2009
PC > Wii > Xbox > PS3 in my eyes, but hey, I’m only someone on the internet.
3.28.2009
PC only greater than others if you don’t want to play against someone else in the same room. Otherwise, Wii>Xbox>PS3, if for no other reason than you can convince your wife/gf to get WiiFit. Hooray for hoola-hoops.

This is Digg… how many have wives & girlfriends?! Although, he *is* asking which console to get, which implies he doesn’t have every edition of every console sold to date….
3.28.2009
yeah baby! see the youtube..
3.28.2009
FWIW, I really like the PS3. Honestly, though, you can’t go wrong with this generation of consoles. Whatever you get, I hope you enjoy it.
3.28.2009
Buried for boring filler. Enough with the speculation you pandas.

This article says nothing really.
3.28.2009
..
3.28.2009
what what
3.28.2009
They should add a Semantic web interface, that would be truly forward-thinking
3.28.2009
People need to stop complaining about the damn Facebook redesign. When will people realize that Facebook is a free service, they don’t have any obligation to please the masses, if you don’t like it use something else. All this complaining reminds me of this clip. youtube.com/watch?v=LoGYx35ypus
3.28.2009
actually, people have found it to be a useful communication/social tool. FB relies on this fact to generate revenue. they changed the tool to one people don’t like. this ‘could’ (won’t, but theoretically could) affect the FB revenue stream. That makes it a situation where FB should pay attention, or be more careful with, how they tweak things. Yes, FB is ultimately a trivial thing. BUT, the article intelligently queries what will happen the first time the online version of MS Office (or google docs if it ever gets serious) does the same thing. What if Office 2003 had been a web service, and MS had pushed the 2007 upgrade out to the entire userbase as an unannounced, no-trial, change?
3.28.2009
I understand the point of the article, I was just making a specific point about Facebook. People will continue to complain but I bet they won’t actually stop using Facebook that is why Facebook can make the decisions it does.
3.28.2009
that’s funny.. ..nice find.
3.28.2009
What’s Facebook? Is it like Friendster? BTW Where is everybody?
3.28.2009
I think every time they redesign facebook it gets worse. It was still the best when it very first came out and it wasn’t for retarded main stream high school kids. I remember using it for school to network with people in my classes, sharing notes, and organizing study groups. I don’t know what happened, but you can’t input your school schedule and meet people in your classes through there unless I’m missing something. I don’t know why they just don’t make it fully customizable. If they just changed it so you could put widgets where you want them and design your own home page, it would be awesome.
3.28.2009
No, then it would be Myspace.
3.28.2009
Anybody who’s so wrapped up in Facebook / Twitter / MySpace that their happiness depends directly on the layout of said site needs to separate themselves from it for a month to concentrate on what’s really important.
3.28.2009
That’s true but how can you when you don’t have some people’s email? Or need to be updated about groups your in. I could do it in 2007 but not now.FB should innovate in terms of groups, events, and music, and be less ad driven intelligentshare.com/2009/03/how-to-monetiz …
3.28.2009
You know why they wont stop with the redesigns? Because all the developers at Facebook – and its entire corporate model become useless. You could run the site with a good number of IT support and 5-6 developers at this point, which you might make a profit; although the company would never be a tech titan – which is exactly what zuckerberg wants to be. Facebook needs to come to terms with what it is – and that is a company that provides a free service, they will never be on the level of Microsoft or Apple.
3.28.2009
Facebook may not be the level of Microsoft, Apple, Google, etc, but it certainly could become an extremely powerful company on the internet – developers *everywhere* are adding Facebook Connect to their applications and websites – soon Facebook is going to be the de-facto single sign-on protocol, something Microsoft, Yahoo and others have been trying to do for years, and that’s just one example… (not that I have another…lol)
3.28.2009
At one point, I’m sure many thought that Google would never amount to anything either.Just sayin’.
3.28.2009
Dugg for the Battlestar picture.
3.28.2009
God I hate all this "cloud-computing" BS. It’s as arbitrary as "Web 2.0". When is the next buzz term going to come along and replace it?
3.28.2009
The "Don’t Design By Committee" paragraph is one of the best worded explanations of a design philosophy I have read in a while
3.28.2009
…but Facebook isn’t Software as a Service…. In order to be SaaS, you have to charge for it… and FB isn’t (and won’t) charge for usage…
3.28.2009
That definition doesn’t specifically detail WHOM to charge for usage. They are charging advertisers right now.
3.28.2009
Don’t talk about Facebook. The founder of Facebook has stolen the code for it from a group of his friends at Harvard.
3.28.2009
Yeah, I’m sure all that code is still in use (If it ever was, which I’m skeptical about).
3.28.2009
I think it’s important for people to be careful not to assume so much. Facebook may be considered "Software-as-a-service", as with other free services online – but technically the SaaS description is more geared toward for-pay programs/services which act more like an actual piece of software like you might install on your computer, or like a business might try to implement (think "resource management" or "inventory tracking"). You shouldn’t judge these services based on your experience with some free website – SaaS services are used for very, very different purposes than sites like this.
3.28.2009
Do they even know what cloud-computing is? I would be interested to know how they think an service oriented web-based application like Facebook even relates to what cloud-computing promises…considering they only mention the word "cloud" in their title. I would expect this kind of talk from newbie who wants to sound cool around the other newbies using "cutting-edge" terms like cloud-computing but a CNET writer? More proof people manage to slide by in IT and software development without knowing sh*t. Throw a couple big words out of which you have no idea what they mean and watch the suits get excited…oops do I sound bitter?
