more servers and more processing power than they can take advantage of..shame.I doubt every one of their 10’s of millions of individual servers if running 100% cpu load of both processors 24/7whats the point of all that ram and power just to process queries, that, and even using dual OC24’s for their data centers isnt enough bandwidth for all those servers to push their data out at peak levels.

YA JEEZ STOOPID GOOGLE!! YOU BETTER RUN THEIR SERVERS IT SOUNDS LIKE U KNOW WTF IS UP AND GOOGLE IS STOOOPID!!

googles approach is efficiency so I can guarantee you those hard drives and the ram is being used to its max 100%.cpus are a bit of a different beast. think of it like this: on a home router (like a linksys or whatever) you don’t want to run its cpu at 100% all the time. if you install custom firmware like dd-wrt it allows for underclocking. why not underclock? I mean, you’re not using the cpu 100% or coming close to it even on heavy load like bit torrent, for example. (say you’re not). So why not underclock? Underclocking will slow the time it takes for data to pass through the router. Like on my linksys wrt54g router at home if i underclock the 200mhz router down to 180mhz my ping spikes up about 2 to 6 more ms depending on what it is. Page loading times can increase by a second or more by average.A cpu in windows is based on 0% or 100% usage but a cpu on any other platform is based on latency. Linux uses the 0, 1, 2, and 3 scale. A number like 0.1 is far better than 1.2 yet, if I remember right, most cpus hit 100% at around 2.Theoretically, running something like folding @home (or something cpu intensive) at a super low priority might not be noticeable to a desktop user but for a server that is transferring data based on the .1 of a ms it will be noticeable.

This article isn’t entirely true. It says that google doesn’t in fact buy their servers, and that they just build their own? I know this isn’t right because I worked for a company that builds servers and it had a few orders from google while I was there. Nothing special went into them but they were a sexy green
4.8.2009
Maybe they weren’t servers for search queries. They might buy servers for other stuff

IBM point of sale hardware has had built in 12v batteries for years… a pain to service, so the batteries have been removed and external UPS’s have been implemented for all check out systems…

A lot of POS machines have a built in batter, but that is becasue they are typically distributed further apart. Standard practice for servers is a central backup power source, becasue it is easier to maintain, monitor, and protect. I like the individal battery idea becasue I think it would be cheaper, and you it distibutes the points of failure over a larger area, so if a few batteries dies, a few servers stop working, not an entire battery arrary powering 10 racks of servers.
4.8.2009
So true, but the article hints as if this was a new concept that google thought of and patented… I’m curious what the time-line looks like…
4.8.2009
it looks so… simple

Wouldn’t housing the servers in very cold climates or underground solve many of the cooling problems? The only downside I see with the first suggestion would be getting people to work there.Microsoft tried this in Siberia.
4.8.2009
There’s more to datacenters than getting rid of the heat. You also need some kind of power infrastructure as well as a decent enough network connectivity… otherwise you’ll have a ton of servers with nothing to do.And no, satellite uplinks do not scale for web services

FTA: "Google’s data centers now have reached efficiency levels that the Environmental Protection Agency hopes will be attainable in 2011 using advanced technology. "This is a stupid sentence. What the hell is the author talking about. It has already been attained. Does he mean other companies will attain it? Or that google has attained it now using regular technology but the EPA wants to use a Stormulaic Framilidizer to get the same results?
