To be fair, digital cell phones are pretty close to VOIP in how they function. The difference is that they get a QOS, which you might not get on the cell company’s data plan. I think VOIP is perfectly good for those things if you are on a decent connection.

The only similarity is that they both employ digital sound. Packets still have a longer physical distance to travel over the Internet then over a dedicated phone network. Dedicated phone networks establish a route and use the same route for all packets. For example if a few Internet packets take a longer route the whole call will lag a little — not enough to matter for most things, but still not quite as good.

I’ve had long-distance job interviews where the employer used Skype to call me at home. Works great. I would definitely use it for those things.

If your a techy applying for a techy job sure…But good luck convincing someone from marketing to take a skype to phone call. If it glitched even just a little they would assume you are cheap.

Meh, I don’t really like Skype. I tried it out and the video quality was ***** (not for me, but the people I was talking to).
4.6.2009
It’s not Skype then, you just have a ***** webcam.
4.6.2009
I just said it wasn’t for me. Did they teach you how to read in school?

The question is, is Skype’s time numbered?Linux with Asterisk VoIP phone system…..Connect to your domain at home/office and initiate your call.
4.6.2009
no because Asstrix is bloatware and too complicated for 99% of users

Before this happens can we please make it illegal to stop advertising "unlimited" data plans when they have a monthly transfer cap?
4.6.2009
data cap / time in a month = effective internet speed and that’s what should be advertised. financial institutions have to do this by using APR instead of interest rates, etc. so ISP’s should too
4.6.2009
Wow, I just did the numbers and if you have Sprint’s "unlimited plan" which has a 5GB/month cap, your effective internet speed is 2kb/sIronic because when I was on their network that’s about the kind of speed I got out of it anyway.

When they incorporate the front facing camera (on non-US phones) for video chat they will…
4.6.2009
I doubt it. Currently, you still have to sign on and make or receive calls. I would say, windows mobile is probably the best usage since it can run background apps. Since Ipone does not run background apps currently, it would be useless. Its just like signing on google talk and calling someone…

I have tried Skype on my computer and it’s a joke compared to ooVoo. ooVoo has better sound quality, and video quality. I have been using ooVoo everyday for meetings since it came out, and nothing out there compares to it.
4.6.2009
Maybe, if the app didnt crash every 2 mins.

I was just going to say this. I’ve seen skype on winmo for atleast 3 years. And Ive used Skype on WinMo over 3G the last year or so. It does drain your battery though. On top of this my operator has had a dedicated skype phone for atleast two years now.
4.6.2009
and winmo beta just got file transfer then all lacking to be on par with full computer version is video callsthe iphone ipod touch version got a bit of growing up yet

on the 3 network in england, had skype on my phone for ages, you can call skype users for free obviously, and call lines in other countries but you can’t call landlines in UK with it, so thats how they get around it.
4.6.2009
not likely the mobile carries will degrade internet service as soon as it becomes a problem.

Forget Windows 7 ? what about, Windows 3.1 on a Nokia N95 ? nokia-inside.blogspot.com/2009/04/windows-3 …
4.6.2009
I’ve had it on WinMo for years and its always worked fine over 3G. Its not that stable though.
4.6.2009
I honestly hope it does.
4.6.2009
…and Skype is only the beginning. I’ve been seeing Gizmo and GoogleTalk on some protos. Actually, I think Gizmo is already out on some models.
4.6.2009
Jail break your phone and use cydia to install VOIPover3G.
4.6.2009
No, they will just charge more for Internet, expose more Caps, and even possibly charge for using a VOIP server and possible calling it a "Data Intensive" service.
4.6.2009
about time to not be ***** over by the cell companies in this country excluding one… i’m sure you can guess which it is .. starts w/ a t… still not available for blackberry yet so i’ll bury it
