9 More Awesome Things That Should Have Happened This Decade
It’s 2009. And there’s been very little of the awesomeness promised by countless science fiction books, TV shows and movies. There’s just so much awesome stuff dreamed-up by creative nerdy types that we were morally obligated to list another nine things that should have happened in this decade. Stupid reality. You’ve let us down again!

You mentioned the SDF-1. I…. I love you. I’m not ashamed to say it.

Believe it or not, Science Fiction – the kind you found in books – was never about predicting the future. It was always about exploring the human condition in alternate realities. It wasn’t until about 1985 or so that people started thinking that SF authors should be judged on the basis of the accuracy of their predictions. Clarke didn’t so much predict communication satellites as point out the obviousness (to him) of their usefulness. Was Star Wars about predicting the future?Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, Gernsback, Bester, Aldiss, Poul Anderson, Dick, Niven, Pohl, LeGuin, Simak, Saberhagen, Sturgeon, Ellison, many many more: every one of them would have (or still will in a few cases) told you that this whole thing about SF being about predicting the future was nonsense.I’m just saying . . .

So many sci-fi movies use years between 2050 and 2200 as their future date… while our space travel experience will be most likely close to the same as it is now by then. After the apollo missions, nobody else went to the moon any more and the first manned tripped to Mars is planned a few decades in the future… Space exploration is a very slow process unfortunately, so sci-fi directors and writers should pick dates much further in the future when it comes to this! How far off movies like Alien and 2001: a Space Odyssey were when it comes to future event dates!

Dugg for SDF-1. I think a lot of us were looking for it when we clicked the link.

I think all those sci-fi authors were being optimistic because they all wanted to see space before they were dead. Now young authors are doing the same thing – praying like hell they’ll live to see 2050-or-so, and that there’ll be anything to see by then.Mortality is cruel to futurists. To everybody, really.

My clothes self dry. You just have to be patient.
10.13.2009
Great List! however they neglected the hovering car. Back to the Future 2 promised us so much…..hover-boards, flying cars, self drying clothes…..sighFor all the real cool stuff we have today it’s no where near what was predicted during the late 80’s….LOL

That’s nothing. Look at all the things that failed to make it by 2000. yorktownhistory.org/homepages/1900_pred …This is real, BTW, not a hoax: img.photobucket.com/albums/v413/jaimeastorg …
10.13.2009
Space Slugs FTW. Those would be cool to see!
10.13.2009
Still waiting on the flying cars…
10.13.2009
How come Duke Nukem forever isn’t on that list?
10.13.2009
Star Wars didnt take place in the future buddy
10.13.2009
If we never get flying cars, It’s going to be because we were wasting our time on the internet.
10.13.2009
The ability to control reality through dreams sounds cool, but I do not think it is something that our society is quite ready to do yet.

More importantly, we still do not have marijuana legalized at the Federal [US] level, we still do not have mass produced hydrogen or electric powered automobiles, the majority of computer owners still do not competently use them, and the Feds are still lying about UFOs.This time line sucks.
10.13.2009
Actually, we had all this crap. Unfortunately, The Doctor had to erase them from the timestream when he defeated the Daleks. Sucks for us.
10.13.2009
How can they have a Max Headroom clip with no Max Headroom in it? I am disappoint.

A TV show that seemed to get the future somewhat close to being right was William Shatner’s Tek War, it’s surprisingly good now that we can look back and see how close the show came to what we have now; electric vehicles, bendable displays on PDA/cellphone (soon), flatscreen monitors everywhere, small lightweight laptops, It was only on from 1994 to 1996, only 13 to 15 years ago but some of the hardware used seemed to be well though out, no huge CRT monitors or MS Windows, everything was networked, a pretty good show future-wise.

Where is my ***** flying car >-[
10.13.2009
"Next year is really, really going to suck." Yup.
10.13.2009
More importantly, look at all the things that did make it to 2000!Most of the transportation stuff would have been likely if it weren’t for the Aeroplane.
10.13.2009
That’s alright – in 50 years we’ll be immortal!
10.13.2009
I might name my first child Minmei.I hope he has an easy childhood.

"I know that Mystery Science Theater 3000 is set in the ‘Not Too Distant Future,’ so it could be any time, but I certainly would have liked to have this decade feature mad scientists, wisecracking robots, more awesome jump-suited people, and advanced technology that looks like it was all pasted together from things you find in a thrift store."Obviously the article’s author has never seen DIY sites like makezine.com, instructables.com, hackedgadgets.com or lifehacker.com, as this proof that we do have "technology that looks like it was all pasted together from things you find in a thrift store". Seriously, why are there so many cool DIY things out there that took some real genius thinking to come up with and end up with shoddy execution? I may not be the best hardware hacker to ever live, but at least I take some pride in my work and don’t make things that look like ass. Duct tape is NOT a proper construction material! Sorry, just ranting now I guess. So you see, at least a few future technology predictions have come to be, albeit I’d rather have a flying car than a mint tin headphone amplifier or wallet made from duct tape.

Stage Fright, go away…This is my big day. This is my time to be a star…And the thrill that I feel…It’s really unrealI can’t believe I’ve come this far…This is my time to be a star….I named my cat after Minmei

uh, that’s next decade, it’s supposed to happen in 2015. Along with the weather service and mass disposal of laser discs
10.13.2009
soon, my friend, soon. It won’t fall by the waste side, it will be abolished.
10.13.2009
This redirected me to a fake spyware notice.
10.13.2009
If you are ordinal there is still another year to get this done.
10.13.2009
I’m using linux. It happened twice.
10.13.2009
a lot of those were weak.
10.13.2009
I’m using Windows, it didn’t happen once. Okay, so it’s not spyware are you sure your traffic isn’t being redirected? This is assuming I’m not already blocking the site that’s reporting the spyware, which is a possibility.Open up wireshark, go to the site, see what other domains it’s connecting to, block them with iptables… happiness.
10.13.2009
I’m still waiting for all religion to fall to the way side.
10.13.2009
I could have come up with a dozen *real* awesome things that genuinely should have happened this decade but didn’t for various reasons (vendor lock-in and proprietary systems holding innovation back, great ideas or projects derailed by political or economic forces, markets made stagnant by oligarchies or collusion, etc.).This is all just lame scifi daydreaming.
10.13.2009
People can’t drive right on the ground, what makes you think they can drive right in the air?
10.13.2009
As I’ve already revealed, I’m an old person.Back in the olden times, my response would have been "No *****, Sherlock!"Can anyone help me out with the correct Digg idiom for "Uh, yeah Pal, that was my point!"?
10.13.2009
@fluidfoundationI would have gone with Commander Breetai, but that’s just me.
10.13.2009
Are there even any big science or technology breakthroughs this decade that didn’t have to do with making something else bigger/smaller or faster?Whenever I think I thought of something, it always was first done last century.
10.13.2009
It came from one of their ads, many big sites are being hit with this crap. Just Install adblock and move along…
10.13.2009
My 1969 Ford Mach I begs to differ with you.
10.13.2009
If we never get flying cars it’s because people can’t even handle two dimensional cars.
10.13.2009
Uh… MST3k happens in 3000… it’s even in the name.*currently work on the top secret satellite of love project… but I’m not supposed to tell anyone.Dickweed!

I said "my" flying car, not "our" ;-P
10.13.2009
Don’t blame the fiction, it’s like those endless cancer cures.Scientists talk big and fail to deliver.
10.13.2009
adBlock is all well and good but you should block this carp BEFORE it gets to your browser. That’s what blacklist firewalls are for.
10.13.2009
Moller said he’ll deliver one soon.
10.13.2009
You have spyware on your machine. It didn’t come from the site.
