"In the six months since launching she had raised just $238.75, barely more than a dollar a day.""$405-a-week benefits."shouldn’t they just deduct the money she makes each week?

Wait…google adsense actually made someone money?!

If we all used AdBlock we could have saved this poor woman $405 per week.Don’t be a douche. Block ads: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/186 …

OK, they SUSPENDED her unemployment benefits completely while they investigate whether those pennies should be deducted from her check or not? That could take months, in which time she’ll find herself in debt up to her ears just for living expenses.

That was the problem with when I lost my job and applied for unemployment. If you earn more than $25 over two weeks. Your benefit is slashed. They should reform the system to motivate you to get off your ass and find some sort of income, even if its a small one.

Just goes to show that being too honest can be a bad thing too. Although an honest lawyer is a bit of an oxymoron. course she’s still new in the legal profession I suppose.
10.18.2009
Are you serious? The legal sector got hit almost as hard as the auto industry. Do not assume that people who got made redundant because of the recession suck at their job lest you be branded an ignorant fool. Actually, too late for that.
10.18.2009
I don’t even get $405 a week from my job while im at college.. seeing that number kinda motivates me to sit on digg all day or play xbox, and just wait for the weekly check instead of actually going out and working to earn my damn money

Most of the time unemployment benefits come from withholding for employer and employee. Right now the job market is so bad that the government had to step in and extend the benefits.

Unfortunately there’s a mandatory 6 month waiting period to get my class registration form approved for that class.

And Libertarians wonder why nobody votes for them "Let the unemployed starve!" is a great campaign slogan.

You can buy a cheaper house, buy a cheaper car, or just walk if you can’t afford home or auto insurance on the more expensive stuff, assuming you have a good job at the time or collect unemployment. You can’t really buy unemployment insurance if you never have money in the first place. I’m pretty sure you would get turned down if you were unemployed for the pre-existing condition of lack of a job.
10.18.2009
she’d probably make more money if she kept her head down

American cars suck.

Except that actually, it’s ended up costing her money (and time and patience). For AdSense though, that’s quite normal.

I makes over $10,000,000 per day on AdSense. See my scanned check image below. You can too! Just by my eBook of clickbank: "AdSense Exposed: Creating your own MLM scheme!"

As opposed to the bureaucrats you have now who will drop your coverage in a heartbeat…
10.18.2009
The auto industry?Wow, bad example. If you ever wanted to find people that sucked at their jobs, you wouldn’t have to walk far across the floor of one of those huge union shops….Not only did they suck at their jobs, but they were making $60,000+/year doing it. Good riddance.
10.18.2009
Exactly. The welfare system in this country is ***** retarded. They let these lazy idiots stay on the damn thing but when someone wants to work, they cut the benefits right away (even for minimum wage jobs).
10.18.2009
@dfross, You obviously do not know someone that is on welfare. Its a big step to get off it, make a small income and you kiss significant amount of benefits goodbye. As for what does the government get out of it, a paying job for someone to administer the benefits. Most of these programs have good intentions, but end up being traps. Its great that the government pays for unwed mothers hospital costs, but as a result poor Pregnant women don’t get married because if they do they loose hospital benefits if their to be husband has ANY income. Also like in the article, the person can’t make any money without risking loosing all thier benefits. Theses traps are all through the government help programs.

They just can’t make an exception to the law for her. What ever ruling they make for her they’d have to consider how other’s would be effected by it.

Unemployment is there for people who are experienced at gaming the system. The average hard working individual will just get screwed over because they trust the system they’ve put thousands of dollars into and make the mistake of being truthful when they expect that system to help them.A few years ago my wife lost her job and attempted to apply for unemployment benefits (it was the first time she was out of a job in the 15 years since she first entered the workforce as a teen). She was denied because she was taking an online course to obtain her real estate license. The course was conducted entirely online with the exception of the final exam which was held on a Saturday. I was stunned when her unemployment benefits were rejected on account of the course she was enrolled in. I had thought that they would encourage this, especially considering she could easily work a part time or even full time job during the course, but they decided that it would interfere with her ability to quickly get off welfare by finding another job. It baffled me because I knew of people who were 2nd generation full time welfare recipients so I didn’t understand how a hard working individual who came upon some bad luck but had a solid plan to get back on her feet could be flat out denied.
10.18.2009
@mikeYou can’t even buy a cheap house, a cheap automobile, or even food without a job or "if you never have money in the first place". You have to start somewhere. Plus, I think you’re forgetting that you normally can’t collect unemployment unless you lose your job. Which means you need to have had one in the first place.
10.18.2009
You must be talking about Medicare, which denies claims at twice the average rate of private insurers.
10.18.2009
So any effort a person makes to supplement their meager unemployment means unemployment is taken away? This makes as much sense as zero tolerance rules or US drug policy.I sure hope she survives in spite of her government!
10.18.2009
And yet, some fat, drunk dumbass of indescriminate race (All races have these) is allowed to set at home and sire/mother more children to garnish more welfare checks, and play the system even more.

an (ex)-lawyer getting done by a technicality… ironic

The unemployment office says you should try to find a job, even if it’s just part time. Then they cut your benefits off and make you do a bunch of paperwork to get them back. If you "attend school or training" – even a night class once a week, they conclude you aren’t available for work and cut you off. If you get a temporary job that lasts a week, they say you’re not eligible because you’ve been employed, and you have to re-apply. Unless you can find full-time employment that pays well, it’s best not to rock the boat and not get any kind of temporary or part-time work if you want to keep receiving benefits – which is the exact opposite of what they say they want. Also, to receive benefits, you have to prove you weren’t fired "for cause". Unscrupulous employers can easily make up a seemingly valid reason to fire someone to avoid paying for their benefits. Only people who can articulately argue their side will get benefits. It’s kind of a messed up system, but it’s unlikely to be made any better.I have an idea that might work – guaranteed employment. Rather than having millions of people unemployed receiving unemployment benefits, do like they did in the New Deal and create jobs for them on public works projects. It would cost quite a bit, but at least we would get something for it, instead of just paying people not to work like we do now. Also it would mean people wouldn’t feel so trapped in jobs they hate. This would not mean that everyone would quit their jobs to go work for the government, but the disgruntled employees would leave and only people who want to be at their jobs would be there. Imagine how much better people’s attitudes would be if they felt like they had a choice about their jobs. It will never happen though because there are too many businesses that have such terrible working conditions that they would fail if people had a way out.

Honesty may be the best policy, but it’s important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy. George Carlin US comedian and actor (1937 – 2008)

Except unemployment is based on a percentage of your income from the job you lost. They don’t just send everybody that much for unemployment. My girlfriend only gets $100 a week from unemployment.
10.18.2009
Unfortunately, you’re both right. Government gains no benefit from keeping people on welfare, but the way the policy is written you are cut off as soon as you find work. Doesn’t matter if it’s temporary, part-time, or contract. Given the fact that there is a lag time between starting work and receiving a paycheck and almost no lag time on cuttin UI benefits it’s a vicious, self-defeating circle.Your last paragraph doesn’t inspire people to do much more than they have to. If the choice is between not working an receiving full benefits or working part-time and receive no help at all you don’t need to be a dummy to see where this is headed.

@absentmindedExcept in a very few, rare cases, you will never get ahead by donating money to charity to avoid tax. On average, you need to donate a $1 to save $0.25 of tax. Obviously, people are not donating for the sole reason of saving taxes.

How much do you have to make in terms of salary to get $405 a week? At somepoint they should just assume your ass better save up 6months worth of money. Imagine if a CEO tried to collect unemployment, he’ll they’d probably give the ***** $10,000 a week.
