Intel Demos 32nm Clarkdales CPUs With On-Board Graphics
The processors will feature multi-chip packages, & the CPU and GPU won’t be merged on a single die. The IGP will be called the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD, and is derived from existing Intel graphics products. We’re told the new core will offer much improved performance–somewhere in the neighborhood of 50%+ higher than the current X4500HD.

It cant even decode 1080p HDTV in real time .. yet they’re calling it a media processor.

i740?I’m all for being skeptical, but you can’t cite ANYTHING 11 years old as a reason not to do something computer related today.

AMD has had out an onboard chip for a while that blows Intel out of the water. Why companies still use Intel’s IGP is beyond me.(I highly recommend you mute most of the following videos.)Prototype: youtube.com/watch?v=YbBPdNAsoSEResident Evil 5: youtube.com/watch?v=TrvDVp50t1cCall of Duty 4: youtube.com/watch?v=ZXJ86mj5I48And before you ask, yes, it can: youtube.com/watch?v=aeO-ANkPb4k

I was with you up until "…and they sure as hell don’t want a desktop."Wrong. Laptops suck for gaming! And I know, I have a gaming laptop. They get hot which also means the keypad gets hot and so your hands also get hot/sweaty, the touchpad is not at all sufficient for anything other than simple Windows games, the fans blow louder than Glenn Beck, they are almost twice as expensive for half the performance of a desktop, and their screen size is either a) too small, or b) if big enough, the laptop is big enough most portability is out the window. Desktops crush laptops. I wouldn’t buy a laptop for any reason today, I’d only go powerful desktop and a netbook for travel/meetings.However, all that being said, people do want simplified computers that will rival 360/PS3 graphics at the same resolutions and quality settings without having to keep up to date on the AMD/NVidia rivalry and tech specs. Not everyone cares about playing at 2560×1600 resolutions with 16xAA and the graphics on max. Yes, it’s nice. No, it’s not worth the money, and this is coming from a major PC hobbyist. PC gaming would benefit immensely from having an integrated chip that would rival those consoles.I’m sick and tired of game developers focusing entirely on consoles and then releasing crappy ports to PC, but I readily admit that until PC gaming is as simplified (not the games, but the experience) and powerful enough for the common, non tech-oriented gamer, that will continue to be the case.Technically speaking though, the HD3200 and 9400 chips aren’t too far behind, so it is feasible.

Let’s see some real benches before we jump up and down for joy.
10.13.2009
yes.intel has made giant jumps in their integrated graphics series but it still is not the same as the high end nvidia or ati.it will even play crysis just not at your max resolution unless you want around 20 fps.
10.13.2009
Will the onboard graphics actually play games such as Modern Warfare 2 with acceptable fps?
10.13.2009
did that laptop have 8 cores at 1.6Ghz?

About time! You know when battery life benchmarks come out, I’m sure it will set new records, and this platform might be the first gaming machine that you can play unplugged. I’m sure that AMD is working on something like this, and I hope it’s even better, but I have to say that I’m really on board in this everything-on-one-die idea.

Sounds alot like MMX from back in the day…

"Why companies still use Intel’s IGP is beyond me."Maybe it’s not interesting for gaming, but it’s interesting if you’re using Linux since the Intel chips have the best open source driver support out there. There were issues with them during the Jaunty cycle, but I still think it’s the best thing out there on Linux right now. They have good enough 3d support to do desktop effects and they support KMS. nvidia hardware is way better, but doesn’t support KMS.

I don’t understand all of the bashing here. Doesn’t this allow for 2 things…additional GPU processing if you have an additional graphics card and on a laptop the ability to turn off the additional graphics card to save power when not needed?
10.13.2009
20 FPS in crysis with a intel onboard? i doubt it, even on very low and a resolution of 640×480.

Regardless of whether a desktop is better for gaming than a laptop, sales figures back up Assasinaus’ statement that people in general ’sure as hell don’t want a desktop’. A recent iSupply study of the PC industry found that despite the down year, "laptop shipments—already higher than desktop shipments on the whole—grew 10% over last year. Desktops were entirely to blame, dropping by an astounding 23%. That’s not decline—it’s free fall." An NPD analyst said that notebooks account for over 80% of PC sales. gizmodo.com/5301401/so-long-desktop-pc-you- …

If nVidia bought VIA and Intel took them to court over it, they’d get smacked up and down by the EU over antitrust, maybe even get that part of their license entirely rewritten directly by the EU to be compliant. I’d not bet against it.

There is a lot of hype from people about Arrandale but all it really is is the Celeron of the Nehalem (i7) product line. It designed to be cheap, only has two cores, and forces the use of integrated gaphics by integrating into the processor package. No thanks, I’ll take a Bloomfied in my desktop and Clarksfield in my Laptop thank you.
10.13.2009
His point still stands as a $500 desktop would get better performance. PCs are cheap as chips these days.
10.13.2009
If integrated gfx were worth a damn, that figure would be much much much different.
10.13.2009
Good. I love a big honking graphics card as much as any other hardcore PC gamer.BUT, pc gaming would benefit IMMENSELY if integrated gfx capability was at least on par with the current console gen. People don’t understand GPU/CPU wizardry. They don’t want to upgrade at all, and they sure as hell don’t want a desktop.
10.13.2009
I saw around 18 to 22 at 800×600.

nVidia buying VIA in 3.. 2…
10.13.2009
why would they want to do what?oww get a x86 licence + cpu? well they can’t.VIA’s x86 licence is non-transferable. so if anybody buys via (or AMD for that matter) they loss intel’s x86 licence.that was included by intel to keep x86 licences out of the hands of people with bucket loads of money to hamper competition (al thou AMD seems to have found a (partial) way around that with the globalfoundries deal).
10.13.2009
its all about the power of the igp, the ati and nvidia igps, have stream processors that (more than one cpu inside), i believe the hd3200 had 40 of them……you know how many Intel has on its gma 4500…1….the gpu core itself (designed as a cpu almost).pay attention the the graphics intensive benches (no playing hd video is not that demanding really, my old (5 years) laptop plays h.264 just fine) anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3430&am …

I’m was referring to the general public in regards to not wanting a desktop. Also, I have a gaming laptop as well.Asus g51 w/ gtx 260m. It actually works really well, however I wouldn’t game on the go or without a good cooler. This is the one I use, and it kicks ASS. newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 …That all being said, a laptop with a gameworthy integrated chipset shouldn’t cost too much, and we are going to see an even further drop due to economy of scale.I did have an i7 system but when I got laid off I wanted to make my scope nationwide (live out of car if i had to) so I sold it and got this laptop.Yes I agree touchpads always such, I use my MS sidewinder
That all being said, I wouldn’t give this machine up, however I WOULD love to have a powerful desktop again as well.
10.13.2009
God damn, this thing might just stand a chance then.
10.13.2009
Does this mean I can use the on-board graphics with my ATI card? What I mean is, could i combine them into one powerful video card?
10.13.2009
Right. Now collect the same statistics from gamers. Consoles are killing the PC gaming market, as well as game developers focusing their attention on consoles these days. A laptop is more than adequate for your average Joe, and who would prefer a desktop to a laptop if you only used it for surfing?Take a look at the steam hardware survey and you wil see that mobile versions of graphics cards are way down the list. store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/

I fell for the hype on the i740 from Intel. Fool me once shame on you…fool me twice I wont get fooled again
10.13.2009
It’s all we have to go on with Intel. I expect a failure again…let’s see what happens!
10.13.2009
When will Intel admit that their graphics chips are worse than even S3’s?
10.13.2009
Oh I have the best buy variant of the g51 btw, it is $999.My gpu idles in 45c-60c range. Gaming anywhere from 55c-70c. That is a bit warm for a desktop, but workable for a lappy. This is with the cooler I linked to. It takes about 5-10c off. It seems to vary a bit (speedfan)I am sure ambient room temperature plays into this a good bit. (in Arizona, we keep it in upper 70s inside so we are not bankrupted by electric bill)
10.13.2009
I love to suck udders.

Hooray!!!
10.13.2009
They already benchmarked the gfx (non retail) about 2 months ago. I can’t find the information any more though. *shrugs*I wonder if Apple will take in the 32nm i7’s?
10.13.2009
@deweyhewsonI disagree. I use my MacBook Pro for gaming and it works fantastic.

YO INTEL, I’M REALLY HAPPY FOR YOU AN IMMA LET TO SPEAK….BUT AMD GOT ONE OF THE BEST INTEGRATED GRAPHICS OF ALL TIME….ALL TIME !!!
