I really wish people wouldn’t bring attention to these things by writing articles about them, I want the inevitable mass copyright holders attack to be avoided for as long as possible.

No, Torrents aren’t going away. Public trackers might be, but torrents live on via private trackers. Find yourself a couple, leave sharing on, donate, support. Viva La Torrents!

Anyone miss warez sites? 50 .zip files and nearly as many porn popups.
10.13.2009
Wow. It’s been forever since I’ve seen the word "Warez" used officially.
10.13.2009
Ahhh…Napster over dial-up. Those were the days
10.13.2009
This happened more than a year ago, way to keep up.

twiztidsinz:You soundlike a young one so I’ll assume your ignorance is due to your youth. Let me explain something. I’ve been using the internet since the mid 80’s. P2P is just a relativly new way to share files. Before P2P there was usenet, IRC, secret FTP sites, and web based file hosting sites. Rapidshare is just a new company but web based file sharing isn’t new. My friends and I used them back in the 90’s. Usenet binaries are still in heavy use for sharing files and so is IRC. Newbies just don’t have any clue those ever existed or are even still in use. And yeah before the internet BBS’s were the way files were shared. So brbubba is correct in his comment about the use of web based file storage for sharing files.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Don’t make such a big deal. Maybe no one will notice!/s

Life Cycle of a pirated file distribution method: 1. medium pops into existance. (eg: IRC, Kazaa, Gnutella, & Bittorrent). 2. users stumble across it, see potential in using it. 3. method grows in popularity, as friends are told, and more people come across it by accident. 4. somebody in news media catches wind of it, sees fame or $$$ and ruins it for everyone by publicising it and attracting everybody else.5. Entertainment Industry sees $$$, starts the sueing/DMCA takedown spree. 6- R.I.P. 7. Another medium pops into existance…… *sigh*….

Pirate hangouts… I’m thinking seedy wharf side bars in the grungier ports of the Caribbean, abandoned oil derricks, Parrot Supply Stores, custom wood and hook prosthesis manufacturers, or maybe they’re hanging out waiting to ambush some ninjas.Calling the use of P2P file transferring "piracy" is sensationalist big content double-speak… unless you’re downloading torrents on the deck of a galleon in the South China sea, drinking grog and wearing an eye patch.
10.13.2009
more than a year ago? BACK TO REALITY!this was the way it was done before p2p and bittorrent was even around!
10.13.2009
BBS’ was da bomb!
10.13.2009
Only a matter of time before people realise piracy boosts sales. I know for a fact that I am not going to buy a thing without testing it first.
10.13.2009
Right, and the rising prices, low quality, bugs, and simple lack of fun that is true of some titles has nothing to do with it. Gotcha.
10.13.2009
What’s funny is these links are posted on Warez forums, so you could say pirating has come full circle from BBSes?
10.13.2009
No, PC gaming is declining because of companies like EA.
10.13.2009
^^ — Sitting an entire night with it connected and you wake up and have 6 songs completed.

Sorry to say this but BitTorrent is pretty much centralized since it needs a tracker in order for you to start sharing. DHT solves most of the centralized problems by keeping the torrent alive if a tracker dies but then again a DHT server that people connect to is yet another central location. You take either out of the picture and you ultimately kill Bittorrent. And sure, you could add more then one tracker to a torrent just in case one dies but your still relying on a server to make connections to and from users. That’s pretty central if you ask me.An example of a good decentralized program would be AllianceP2P. It’s designed to work with IP and DNS to connect to your friends. No server is ever needed. It’s similar to WASTE only less confusing.

Shhhhhhhhh nobody is supposed to know!
10.13.2009
Only idiots subscribe. Pros just use megaupload for free.
10.13.2009
Hate to bust your bubble, but… Rapidshare (2006) and MegaUpload (2005) — which this article focus on — weren’t around before P2P(napster:1999, edonkey:2000, kazaa:2001 emule:2002)/Bittorrent (2004).Prior to P2P/Bittorrent things were sent through FTP servers, Newsgroups and DCC.
10.13.2009
I’ve been checking the page every day
10.13.2009
Nope. I don’t miss dialup, either!! I got cable internet like two weeks before napster was shutdown.
10.13.2009
Yes, Rapidshare is the new p2p… Forget BitTorrent, spend your millions of litigation money on Rapidshare instead. No, really. I’m not trying to distract you or anything… Rapidshare has COMPLETELY taken over P2P… So shut them down and their hydra spawn… Just forget about BT, whatever that old thing is./s
10.13.2009
Honestly I can’t find a good replacement. Isohunt is ok but the comments on demonoid alone made it much better. TPB has always been rather crappy imo.
10.13.2009
They’re now subpoenaing your IP from digg’s webmasters right now, writing a GUI in Visual Basic, and correllating your username with your torrents.
10.13.2009
Nope, because I had photoshop 5 downloading as well!! talk about fun!!! And who can forget the windows whistler beta’s???
10.13.2009
This is just one of those filler stories, nothing has really changed in p2p… P2P is still strong. The Pirate Bay is not down, Usenet is better than ever.Torrent are very popular, ftp sites are coming back.. Now that there are tools like "Skip Screen" these down loader sites are useful."Direct Connect" DC++ is less used.Portable drive and thumb drives are more used. Some media thugs are trying to get passed a bill to attact p2p.. Calling it some kind of consumer protection act. govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill= … newteevee.com/2009/09/29/limewire-in-the-cr …

Game piracy wasn’t mainstream until the last 5-6 years? That’s funny. I seem to remember widespread piracy of Apple ][ games back in the early eighties.
10.13.2009
What’s replacing The Pirate Bay? Private trackers.
10.13.2009
Rapidshare and MegaUpload were not the first DDL sites, and hymneforthedead said nothing about them. By "that’s the way it was done" I’m pretty sure he means DDL.
10.13.2009
I don’t know about you, but ordinary people like myself wouldn’t buy a DVD that was already watched. Same goes for songs that you’ve already downloaded that freaking same files onto your hard drive. Can’t try it beforehand, though *****. Don’t go into any restaurants that won’t let you have a bit of each dish before you order them, don’t buy a house unless the owner let you live in there for a period of time for free. You can’t have a "trial version"? Lmao. Since when hearing comments or ratings not good enough to help you to make a purchasing decision. Hell it’s good enough for 99% of the stuff that you buy at your local supermarkets or malls, but it’s just not good enough when it comes to movies and music even though they offer demo that you can actually try beforehand? Download all you want, I don’t ***** care. Don’t be a pussy about it and making all the ***** excuses.
10.13.2009
let’s go back to downloading them from eggdrop bots on irc!!
10.13.2009
I don’t think torrents will go away, probably they will be reinvented. People mostly use them to download big amount of data, such as hi def movies, an artist’s discography and things alike. IMHO, p2p is not being seen anymore basically because it was used for music more than anything else, and online music sales are everywhere today and pretty accessible to the public. Which makes me think that there is a bigger quantity of people that get their media content from questionable sites, but they do it because no one can offer them a legal way of doing so. Ok, there’s Amazon, iTunes Store to mention some, and lots of other places where you can buy media, but it’s not that easy (meaning kind of difficult) for people who live outside of their range of service.
10.13.2009
*****. Piracy of games has ALWAYS happened, and it’s always been easy.Pirating console games isn’t hard either… and you can get them from any torrent site.Blame MMOs like WoW, or more accurately a lack of GOOD games for the decline of PC gaming.
10.13.2009
i would love to go down to the docks with my netbook and maybe a few highcap usb sticks and "do some business"

Warez; n. A term used in internet links to fool the less savvy of internet-goers (read: noobs) into clicking when they think they’re being rebellious or sneaky in ways that exemplify intellect (read: 1337). See also: trojan, botnet, bonzibuddy, aol

"The Man" is determined to piss in my cheerios.
10.13.2009
@twiztidsinz What are you talking about they weren’t as popular? They were hugely popular before P2P
10.13.2009
Yeah, my first through was ‘Oh, so just like it used to be?’
10.13.2009
In the early eighties, every single person I knew with a computer was sharing copies of their software. I cannot recall a single person that didn’t.I got my first modem in 1984. I used it to connect to BBSes. Other than porn, what do you think occupied most of BBSes back in that time? Copes of commercial software.Just because you didn’t notice game copying until 2004 doesn’t mean it hasn’t been widespread for a very long time.
10.13.2009
Correct, it’s easy to forget that someone is sitting in a cube 10 hours a day like the rest of us to develop this software. I don’t work for free and neither do they. It’s gotten so much easier to purchases legal copies of games now as well with services like Steam and Impulse.
10.13.2009
…and usually sucks in displaying features.Remember that if I’m going to buy something, I want to test the exact features I’m going to be stuck with.
10.13.2009
yes, messenger pigeon’s with usb drives attached to their legs.
10.13.2009
TimtheTaxMan: Gaming piracy was always mainstream within gaming culture. I remember getting a bunch of A: diskettes with games on them for my Windows 3.1 in 1997 from my cousins. ***** was so cash (Cosmo and Commander Keen FTW)

Rapidshare – Just not for porn anymore
