How Google.org is using its algorithms to save the world. If knowledge is power, the Google revolution has empowered us all. Never in human history have so many people had access to so much knowledge, made relevant and ordered to their needs.

While Google does give quite a bit under their corporation, I’m sure Microsoft easily eclipses them, but more self-interested donations, like computer labs. If Google isn’t evil, then Bill Gates is a saint, just based on the amount he donates.

Complete nonsense.China gave Google 2 choices.1) Do business in China as a censored search-engine.2) Don’t do business in China at all.Google says, "Hmm… any positive number for cash flow is better than zero. And there are alot of people in China. I think we’ll take some positive number"China say, "Good. Welcome Google!"

Aww … Google wants to save the planet. That is so ADORABLEZ!!!Please… Google is a business like any other. They’ve never done anyting I consider to be "evil". But when one company controls how a large percentage of the free world gets it’s information, you had better keep an eye on them, regardless of how many trees they’re planting.

I bet google wrote this article…

Limited, filtered service is at least no worse than none at all. Google could have conscientiously refused to cooperate, but to what end? They’d be rejecting business AND passing up what little possibility existed of having any small, positive impact at all on what information reached the Chinese public.

except this is google.org (their philanthropic arm) – adsense is their business/commercial arm. something has to pay for the .org

No, it’s obeying government mandates. Whether you consider the government evil is a different matter.

Is this why Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt joined the super-shadowy and evil Bilderberg cabal hellbent on creating a totalitarian New World Order? wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&page …Take the sleep masks off your minds and wake up!

This is a joke. Whether Google is evil or not is in the eye of the beholder – and let’s face it, when you’re as big as Google you can have the best intentions in the world and still be perceived to do evil, doubly so when your intentions are to public earnings demands. webstarts.com

the beauty of google is that they hit upon a valid market where people *literally* dump wheelbarrows of money at their doorstep (i’ve seen it happen) – advertising. this model is great since it doesnt depend on screwing the customer or providing ***** service. add to that the open source philosophy of the founders and you’ve got a pretty damn good company.

You can’t forget their privacy village! theonion.com/content/video/google_opt_o …Obviously sarcastic, if the onion didn’t give that away.

Google really didn’t have much of a choice on that. They had to either listen to the Chinese or not have buisness there at all.If you’re going to blame anyone for that, blame the Chinese Government. If they had the choice google would never censor their search results.

Until they take an interest in controlling our weapons systems, I consider Google benign.

Yes, Google.ORGFrom Wikipedia:"Google.org is the charitable arm of Internet search engine company Google. The organization has committed $75 million in investments and grants as of January 2008. To fund the organization, Google granted them 3 million shares during their initial public offering. As of December 8, 2008, at a price of $310, Google.org’s 3 million shares have an approximate value of about $1 billion. Google has also pledged to contribute one percent of their annual profits to their charitable organizations." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google.org

If nothing else, Google deserves praise for being an example that you can profit as a company without being a dick. So many of the arguments that are used to justify ***** corporate behaviour claim it’s in the interests of profit – and this kind of example proves that simply isn’t true.

have you read up on that? it actually sounds really awesome. you can get graphs of your electric usage and it will even detail which devices are pulling what. as soon as you give people a visual on what they consume, they almost always start trying to optimize and reduce. its the puzzle solver in all humans. google.org/powermeter/smarterpower.html

Zambauhaag can drink all the decaf he wants. he’s sharp enough to make a point. He might be a bit off topic, I agree it should be under the scrutiny of people and free press(Which can be found in a democracy) what this Bilderberg is all about. See his link and the part about a press photographer held in custody and was pressedto delete all of his pictures. Needless to say that one (ONE) of the pillars of a free society and true democracy is free press. It concerns me that a lot of influential and powerful people think about a world order. If it’s about a borderless world without any world wars, I’m all for it and globalize immediately. (An article on TED Talks that opts an idea : ted.com/talks/parag_khanna_maps_the_fut … )If it has anything to do with George Orwell … you’d better get informed. Since Google (which gives us a daily dose of our information) has a CEO, who’s involved in the Bilderberg Group, Zambauhaag might not be so off topic at all. I’m really NOT saying that Google misinforms in anyway, but manipulations occurs only to the ones who don’t know. In the end I’d still rather use Google instead of bing … but I’ll try to keep my eyes open.

"Google.org is proposing equipping EVERY ELECTRICAL DEVICE with a meter, then linking it to a Google service that tells you these numbers in real time."lol wut?

And why don’t morals come into play when they make this decision? They’re original motto was "don’t be evil", but they stopped saying it when they made this deal. They knew damned well it was wrong, and they were making money from it. Sure, someone else would have taken that market if Google had said no- but it wouldn’t have been as good a Search Engine. Google increased their revenue at the cost of their soul.

Yes, percentage wise. Gates has publicly said that he intends to leave very little of his fortune behind when he dies, as most of it will go to charities.

Let me just give you this little link here: latimes.com/news/la-na-gatesx07jan07,0, …If you’re investing in the companies causing many of the same problems you claim to want to fix, what is the end result? Hard to say, but the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is hardly a fully "good" organization.

percentage wise?

Uhm they were the leader in helping china design and implement their firewall to restrict their citizens from information. Is that not "evil"?

Remember when the storage limit for your email Inbox was at 4MB? I remember the stress and worry of finding important messages deleted when the account was not checked for some days. Who would have imagined an Inbox of 7GB for free? Google made mega dollars through handling advertisements on the Net, good for them (and the advertisers who made sales). At the same time, Google had also used some of that to provide free services to us. Besides the very important email, there’s Blogger.com, Google Maps, Google Earth… Picasa too. Did Microsoft provide things on the same scale and usefulness before Google made it big? It’s super-rich but I have no hatred of Google, that’s for sure.
