ZDNet Officially Retracts Claims Against Yahoo & Iran
This is the same Larry Dignan who is Editor in Chief of ZDNet, which is the same ZDNet that yesterday published a blog post accusing Yahoo of passing the names and email addresses of thousands – sorry, hundreds of thousands – of bloggers to the Iranian authorities during the country’s recent election.

***** like this has always happened in journalism, it’s effects have just been magnified thanks to 24 hour news channels and the internet. Remember the guy who was supposedly arrested because he forgot soda on the bottom of his shopping cart? There was outrage against the supermarket and the police until video was released showing the guy putting the soda on his cart after checkout and had lied to the media. Or just recently when the 9/12 protesters paraded around saying two million people had been at their rally despite the source of the original claim never existing. Or the claims of rape that get support by tools like Sharpton only to turn out to be false. The Yahoo case looks like a prime example of bad journalism exacerbated by the rapid spread of news. You can cite your source but you shouldn’t take it up as fact unless you can collaborate it somehow. Less ZDNet now post about how Glenn Beck raped and murdered a girl in 1990 and summarizing the article with a, "If true, this is a deeply troubling development and exposes Beck as determined to rape and murder people, regardless of who they might be. Little girls, sheep, who else?"Regardless, the Digg admins ought to automatically promote this to the top of the tech news list so those who still believe the Yahoo story can become better informed.

This happens all the time around here- something stupid and unsubstantiated will make the First Page, and anyone who dares to actually do any research will be ruthlessly Buried, while everyone who just posts the same tired, cynical crap like "***** YAHOO" will get hundreds of Diggs. If you ever wanted to know how and why a lynch mob works, just study Digg for a while. 90% of you don’t give a damn what the truth of any given situation might be- all you care about is joining the Group Consensus as early and completely as possible.

ZDNet may retract the story, but the masses of digg commenters won’t.

Its not like zdnet was ever known for fantastic journalism. The few times I went to that site they didn’t know tech from their ass.

Well what do you expect from a guy that accepted a $2,000 laptop from Microsoft as a gift but never disclosed it: news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-6146463-7.html?t …Why do thing the FTC is mandating that come December 1 bloggers must disclose this because under new guidelines it’s potential ad fraud: tech.yahoo.com/news/zd/20091005/tc_zd/24468 …Ethics don’t seem to be his strong point.

Journalist accountability died with this: docs.google.com/gview?a=v&q=cache:oqjOF …It’s a court filing allowing Faux News to distort facts and report them as accurate under the guise of Free Speech.Original document found here at the Florida Second District Court of Appeals: 2dca.org/opinions/Opinion_Pages/Opinion …

Some people just feel the need to be apart of a movement. Behind the computer is generally a safe place to do it.

I’m surprised this story about Iran didn’t come from techcrunch to be honest. They usually have the tendency to post ***** stories.

The original story was true. This is a massive coverup.
