Google vs Facebook fight for Web dominance
Facebook has emerged as a serious competitor to Google for the Web Dominance. Facebook.com is the second most visited site after Google.com, and its Facebook connect is fairly successful in getting quality sites use it. The fight is on, and is interesting to watch in days ahead.

When Facebook offers a state of the art search engine, a version of OpenOffice, maps, news aggregator, rss reader, email, finance, shopping, etc, etc, THEN maybe Google can worry. Until then, I don’t see what the "competition" is.I guess I’ll put it this way. Which one would cause a serious blow to the world if they went away, resulting in loss of productivity?Let’s say you take the ad revenue as the "competition". They aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s not like people are going to Facebook instead of Google. Maybe the article should focus on actual competitors. Like Google/Bing/Yahoo and Facebook/Myspace/Hi5

Google doesn’t break multiple times a day.

I don’t think anyone sees this as a serious rivalry. Facebook is cute and google runs the world.

Google is an incredible example of going against "how you develop a business strategy" espoused by consultants and theorists: Google has taken Microsoft head on, a feat that is taking the best of Apple’s resources, and simultaneously taken Apple head on. And now Facebook? Let’s see, the business school case studies on how to take on 3 market leaders at once.Go Google! Go competition! Go consumer choice!
12.12.2009
Doesn’t gmail help you do that?
12.12.2009
facebook sucks.
12.12.2009
To keep with obvious tone: what do people do with each of these two? With Google they explore the whole ‘net for all purposes. With Facebook they interact with limited circle in walled garden.

Anyone else get a bad feeling in their gut whenever you see one of those messages? It usually just means they broke something or designed some way that’s actually a lot more intrusive in your life.

Regardless of who wins, I think we should all agree that the writer of this extremely poor article deserves to lose.

What? But they do completely different things! Apples and oranges, people.

Isn’t that Apple?Don’t bury me, I type this from my MBP!

If Facebook would just get a dislike button, it’s IPO would soar and Google wouldn’t even be able to afford them!</sarcasm>

Facebook’s job is to connect people – plain simpleGoogle’s job is to provide accurate research results for its user – plain simpleThe two sites are important.

Facebook = MicrosoftIt’s not broken, that’s a feature.

I’m not sure if I’d even classify this as a rivalry. Obviously it seems Google would be the ‘winner’ here. But I for one, as douchey as it sounds, check on my facebook page more than I "Google" stuff.

One’s a search engine, one’s a social networking site. There’s no fight. They’ll both coexist.
12.12.2009
Facebook’s goddamn homepage interface never stays the same!

Google doesn’t help me have fun and stay in touch with family and friends. Facebook doesn’t help me find *****. But GoogleBook would be awesome. Like, three wolf moon awesome. I would take it out back behind the middle school and get it pregnant.

Facebook is great for connecting to people you know or knew from the past. That’s it. The rest is crapola. The applications are like spam bots. Each one needs to access your private details. Each one bombards all your friends with massive amounts of crap requiring the News Feed (vs. Live Feed) to try to cull some of that *****. I’d much rather trust Google than any number of entities constantly trying to emotionally blackmail into giving them access. Sure, it’s an effective ploy at first – but people just come to accept it as high pressure marketing.

Facebook or Google? Which would you really miss if one were to go offline indefinitely?Just thinking about it gives you a good guess at how insignificant Facebook really is.

Pretty apt comparison.
12.12.2009
This article is a waste of time. Google and Facebook are not even on the same business models. Google is search and productivity. Facebook is fun and connections. Let Google go offline for 10 mins then you can get your ans
12.12.2009
Yes, I did just open this from my rss just to bury it due to the title. It is a phenomenally stupid one.
12.12.2009
lol… Facebook should be competing with Myspace. Google doesn’t even see them as a threat.
12.12.2009
"Google is not a social networking tool"Google provides Orkut, iGoogle, Gmail, Google Calendar, Sidewiki, Google Reader, Google Profiles, Wave and OpenID + OAuth (which provides access to their OpenSocial API in a similar fashion to Facebook Connect). It’s not social networking in the traditional sense, but it is in the literal sense."facebook is not a search engine/everything else that it is"Ok, this one is a bit more figurative, Facebook provides Bing results in their search feature and their application platform could provide everything else (it sounds funny now but even the OpenSocial guys said that at some point Google Docs could end up a social networking application).

I don’t think they need to rival Microsoft, since MS has a near 2% share in Facebook.
12.12.2009
The idea Google vs Facebook may be interesting, but still, the article sucks really hard.
12.12.2009
Well I agree that sometimes search engines index site that is not that accurate based on what you search.
12.12.2009
Tell me about it this has got to be the dumbest comparison ever.Talking about traffic is completely useless there are a lot of websites that get a lot of traffic but don’t make a penny in revenue. If you want a real idea of how well a website is doing look at its profit margins.Google is the king of the hill because it prints money not because a lot of people click on it. Facebook doesn’t make even a fraction of what Google does.

As long as people are still "googling" Facebook, Google will win.
12.12.2009
Reverse stalking website vs most useful content ever? No challenge, but people who want everyone to know that they are going to be at xx place at xx time alone so they can get raped provides competition I guess.
12.12.2009
Well i think what he meant was that Google provides information that’s accurate to the search you’re doing.
12.12.2009
lol. not even similar!!! Google is a search site whereas Facebook social media, and nonsense. Google has a LOT more usuable information. Unless of course you are looking for status updates on your friends. I think however Google should watch out for sites such as twitter. Although twitter is not exactly in the business of searching like Google, it is a very good site for networking, and finding relative information for whatever you are looking for. If you have a particular business and make a whole bunch of twitter contacts, they are constantly relaying you back relative information, and things you may not have thought about, but are indeed interested in. The only real competition Google has in my mind is Bing, and Yahoo because they are "Search Engines"

Facebook isn’t even in the same league as Google.
