"Internet searches showed"? Completely meaningful and informative attribution! /s
12.12.2009
but can this meme die yet?Seriously, this stopped being funny at least 6-months ago.
12.12.2009
this meme stopped being funny when crysis capable machines became affordable.. which was long before 6 months ago.
12.12.2009
To try it, mostly. Just like using Chrome if you have FF.
12.12.2009
Not unless someone makes a Flash port of it
12.12.2009
I didn’t forget the /s tag, my post is just a case study in the reading comprehension of the average digger. Considering the results so far, it’s not looking good ; )
12.12.2009
I hope you forgot the /s tag. Chrome OS is free to download. It’s only source code as of now off their official site. The torrents out there are compiled builds for lazy people (like myself) to use on a VM. It’s Google, basically every product of theirs is free.

"Those sites have never been used to share anything legally, this just proves it."C’mon, anyone digging this guy down clearly doesn’t understand quality trolling/sarcasm.
12.12.2009
He references "Don’t copy that floppy" for *****’s sake! No-one does that seriously. Jesus there are some dumb bastards on this site.
12.12.2009
@otros @megawizhe’s being sarcastic without using an "/s" tag. it’s not ***** rocket science.i swear to god, people these days.
12.12.2009
Really? I been doing it forever.
12.12.2009
This is so sad. Google put a lot of money into developing this Operating System, and those Pirates are ruining it by giving it out for free? I swear, how can torrent sites stay open when they’re only used for illegal file sharing? Those sites have never been used to share anything legally, this just proves it.I mean, how are Google employees supposed to feed their children when you’re downloading this open source operating system through torrents? What’s next, you’re going to download their cars? Jeez, whatever happened to "Don’t copy that floppy." The internet used to be such a nice place.
12.12.2009
I’ll try it. Honestly I dont feel the world is ready for it just yet… too many apps required that just are not web based yet.
12.12.2009
some of us are old enough to remember when AOL wasn’t even a part of the internet as we know it today. They had their own network and things were fine without them.
12.12.2009
@MaxterSwing and a miss.
12.12.2009
Even if 3.2 TB is a lot (I have ~1TB), the line "The posted files are large: A compressed version of a VMware-ready Chrome OS build tips the scales at 281MB." makes me want to stop this guy from writing about anything technology related.

Here are links to a version I compiled: rapidshare.com/files/310240546/ide.vmdk.7z. … rapidshare.com/files/310241525/ide.vmdk.7z. …Download and extract using 7zip. Then open with VMWare or VirtualBox.More information here: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1331975

‘Pirate Bay, for example, sported about nearly 3,000 "seeders," the term for a computer that has a complete copy of the torrent file and is able to share it with others.’Because anyone reading that article will have no idea what Seeds mean.
12.12.2009
It is an interesting concept but I am not really jumping out of my chair to get my hands on it. Should be fun to try out though.
12.12.2009
@davidwasmanOf course you can access your files. Just set up your existing PC as a server.
12.12.2009
Variation. Although you might be content on a diet comprised solely of Windows potato chips, it is not the healthiest thing in the world. Think of trying new operating systems as the "broccoli" of your digital life.
12.12.2009
You’re running Windows 95, right?
12.12.2009
Most major Linux distros offer torrent downloads…OpenOffice offers torrent downloads…Torrents aren’t illegal.Educate yourself about thing and maybe you won’t be an idiot.
12.12.2009
The people digging you down are probably too young to have used AOL dial-up.I still have nightmares of running Kazaa over AOL dial-up on a P2 400mhz with 128mb of ram with a 100mhz FSB.
12.12.2009
Best part "downloading this open source operating system through torrents?"
12.12.2009
No, Google would have you do it completely in HTML 5 and Javascript/AJAX, requiring 100 times as many IPS as native machine code…on both ends. But it would be totally web based!
12.12.2009
For people that want to run chromos now, I remember reading that the code released is nothing like what was demo-ed, so I don’t it is worth the try at the moment.

12.12.2009
Like when all they had were keywords and no web access. I’m getting nostalgic.
12.12.2009
Or taking several hours to download one song off Napster to be disconnected at the 60% mark by the user going offline or an incoming phone call. Then having to start ALL OVER AGAIN.(for those too young to know you couldn’t resume a download and you could only download from one user at a time in Napster)
12.12.2009
i’m kind of jealous of your 400mhz and 128mb of ram. not only do you have twice as much ram needed for my everquest fix, but the wheel of time must run at 60fps.
12.12.2009
stfu.
12.12.2009
Kazaa?
What about taking several hours to download one song off Napster?
12.12.2009
wow . . . pirate networks . . . keep drinking that kool aid . . .
12.12.2009
Yea, you guys phail. Sorry to inform you. (no /s tag on this one. In case you couldn’t figure it out.)
12.12.2009
you have to run it as a virtual machine, obviously.
12.12.2009
basically a video of him logging in and checking his mail, wish there was some other kind of apps they had to show for in this build.
12.12.2009
It’s an article about the Chrome OS hitting BitTorrent, but theres no link to the torrent? They do know that it’s open source and that not all torrents are illegal, right?
12.12.2009
fast mirror, have to register gdgt.com/google/chrome-os/download/
12.12.2009
Could I dual-boot this with Ubuntu?
12.12.2009
I think what’s most interesting is the difference in attitude between MS, Apple and Google. ZOMG! Piracy! vs. ZOMG! People are using our stuff! Cool! We can build a business on that!
12.12.2009
AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve…2400 baud modem…1 hour to download one floppy…
12.12.2009
Not when the OS is open source and you can check the MD5. (In this case, you’re prolly right, given that custom versions, already compiled, is what is being offered). Also, right now, it seems like most people are just trying it out in VM, so it’s hardly dangerous.
12.12.2009
Who gives a *****? Seriously. It’s a browser appliance OS. Even Android beats the pants off this, and Android blows goats.
12.12.2009
I’ve got it running on VMware Server right now. I guess I don’t see what the big deal is yet. I’ll chalk it up to being beta, but it doesn’t seem like anything more than being able to run the chrome browser directly on your hardware without an OS in the background.
12.12.2009

Educate yourself in computer security. You seem very slow so I’m going to take the time to spell it out for you.Running an OS that someone else– someone completely anonymous, with NO accountability, often in other countries has compiled, is the height of stupidity. For a counterexample, consider Microsoft, the evil empire. They are evil, but we know who they are, they are highly visible, they are a target for such things as lawsuits. Some guy in Bulgaria who compiled your OS for you? Not so much. Part of what makes it so damn stupid is the fact that you can get it straight from the source and compile it yourself. The fact that I’ve been downvoted for my statements on this subject is an example of the way Digg has deteriorated. Now it seems like it’s largely kids who don’t know jack but feel empowered to be rude and obnoxious on whatever subject.Consider this: let’s say you’re going to get a lock for your house. Where are you going to get it? Are you going to get it from Yale? Are you going to get it from some engineer at MIT who releases opensource deadbolts?Or are you going to buy it from Keljik’s Kyrzig Lock and Rug Company, who you know runs a large automotive chopshop and fencing operation right out back?Who’s really the idiot?
12.12.2009
The most impressive feature is that it comes prejudged.
12.12.2009
I’ll load it into a virtual machine and try it out. I think there is some technology that can be taken from this, like its ability to automatically reimage from online is interesting. However, I don’t see the OS itself as catching on.
