Intel’s integrated graphics are about to get a stereoscopic shot in the arm this summer. Although the Computex presentation today wasn’t clear on whether it would come in the form of a firmware update or all-new hardware, we’re being promised the ability to watch 3D movies straight off Blu-ray discs. Mind you, the GMA HD graphics aren’t aimed at competing with NVIDIA’s 3D Vision or any other heavyweights, not least because they’ll be relying on polarized lenses to generate that extra sense of depth. Intel had even better news regarding its Wireless Display tech — which throws your laptop’s picture onto a nearby HDTV — as it will soon be spreading out to “over 30″ laptop models and going global. You can count on Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sony, Toshiba, and Samsung to bundle this Google TV-killing functionality in with their portable computers sooner rather than later.

Oh yeah baby, Qualcomm’s finally shipping its first dual-core Snapdragons. To whom, is the big question. Its third-generation Mobile Station Modem MSM8260 and MSM8660 Snapdragon chipsets for high-end smartphones — originally announced in February 2009 — are now sampling and capable of running at up to 1.2GHz. The MSM8260 supports HSPA+, while the MSM8660 brings support for multi-mode HSPA+ and 1xEV-DO Rev. B. Both integrate GPS, a GPU with 2D / 3D acceleration engines for Open GL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1, 1080p video encoding and decoding, a dedicated low-power audio engine, and support for 24-bit WXGA 1,280 x 800 pixel displays. Anybody at Computex care to step forward with a reference design?
Update: We just spoke with company representatives here at the show, and try as we may, we couldn’t convince anyone at the company to show off a dual-core reference design. We were flat-out told that the only people at Computex getting a glimpse at the new silicon were prospective customers, though we did manage to pry out a few interesting details about the chip itself and the future of the line. For one, these new chips have two application cores and a single modem core, whereas existing chips have a single application core alongside a single modem core. We were also told in no uncertain terms that an even quicker version of the Snapdragon would be launched before the year’s end, and as you’d likely surmise, it’ll be aimed at “larger screen” devices — you know, [...]

You know that Dell Streak tabletphone that’s got us all hot and bothered these days? Yeah, well, what with all the stabbing, we totally didn’t notice that the device has already been priced in the UK. When it launches on June 4th at The Carphone Warehouse, the Streak will cost you a sizable £429 off-contract — the same Apple wants for an iPad 16GB — but not a penny if you opt for its data plans (carried by O2). With a £25 mobile broadband contract or a £35 voice and unlimited data contract, the five-inch WVGA slate will be yours to take home free — the same as Carphone’s iPhone 3G pricing. We don’t know quite yet if O2 UK’s official tariffs will be cheaper or more expensive, but the tree doesn’t grow too far from the apple, as they say.

After 3-D movies and 3-D TVs, it’s time for computers to go into the third dimension.
Companies such as MSI and Asus will be showing 3-D PCs at Computex, a huge trade show for manufacturers of PCs and PC components held every year in Taipei, Taiwan. This year, Computex runs from June 1 to 5.
MSI plans to introduce a 24-inch 3-D net-top: a desktop computer with its internals built into the display case, similar to an iMac.
“We can run 3-D movies, games, photos and TV,” says Clifford Chun, product manager for all-in-ones and desktops at MSI, “and by just pressing a button you can switch between 2-D and 3-D modes.”
MSI’s rival Asus will debut a 3-D laptop with a 15.6-inch display and desktop similar in screen size to that from MSI. The 3-D PCs are expected to be available in the third quarter of the year.
“People may choose a 3-D PC because it is a less expensive way to get 3-D content,” says Rob Csongor, vice president of marketing for Nvidia, which makes graphics cards that power the 3-D PCs. “Companies are coming out with some beautiful devices that are going to be a higher-end product initially but they will be very attractive to consumers.”
With Hollywood’s success in films such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, the 3-D format has made a big comeback. And it’s not confined to just the big screen. The 3-D TV was one of the biggest stars of the Consumer Electronics [...]

If there was any doubt that cable operators were to blame for the crappy set-top boxes most people use — and not Motorola or Cisco — then this VIP2060 puts it to rest. This DVR will likely never see the US shores with its four tuners and 500GB hard drive because that would be just too awesome. Add in the box’s ability to tune IPTV, satellite and over the air signals and it really makes it a dream box that we’ll never get. Of course all these specs don’t shed any light on quality of the software and since the box is unobtainable, we’re going to just believe that the software is dreaded, because that is what its going to take to get us through this post.

For all its faults, the prime reason we panned Microsoft’s Kin was price. Why buy a Kin when you could get a more capable iPhone, Palm Pre or Android device for the same price? This week, it seems someone at Best Buy HQ has seen the light. As of today, the brick-and-mortar electronics superstore has knocked $50 off the price of both handsets, making the Kin One free and the Kin Two cost only $50 on a two-year contract, with no mail-in rebates or other nonsense required. Now, if only do something about that $30 monthly data plan, your teen might finally have a vaguely compelling reason to pick one up.

Good news / bad news, folks. First with the smiles: PlayStation 3’s first 3D-enabling updates are due out on June 10th for downloadable titles Super Stardust HD, WipEout HD, and Pain. The first two games get the added dimension for gratis, but Pain lovers (who should be accustomed by now to its abundant premium add-ons) will need to fork over ¥300 (approximately $3.28) for the benefit. The other stickler is that these updates are so far only announced for Japan — and by merit of a Bravia promotion, Europe as well. So what’s a North American gamer with a penchant for wearing special glasses to do? Keep waiting, true believers.

We can’t vouch for the authenticity here, but a shot over Berry Reporter alleges that Big Red will finally start taking orders for the Bold 9650 via direct fulfillment this week — on June 3, to be exact. Considering Verizon’s time-honored tradition of being all over RIM’s latest CDMA releases on the double (probably because their development is funded largely by Verizon’s orders), we’re actually kind of surprised it’s not on shelves already; it’s possible that Sprint negotiated a short, sweet exclusivity period for itself just to get a little bit of a head start, we suppose. Anyhow, if you don’t want to mail-order this thing, the shot goes on to say that you’ll be able to check it out and buy it in stores on the 10th of the month, so hold tight.
[Thanks, Christopher K.]

Not a bad week considering the time of year. We have a pretty nice day and date that even the Netflix and Redbox customers will get to enjoy — but not 3D fans. And we have a fantastic documentary from the BBC, although we were really annoyed to see that Netflix is currently only offering the crappy version for rent. Then best of all — well maybe — we have a number of great Clint Eastwood titles like Heartbreak Ridge, Absoulte Power and The Rookie. Well the last one isn’t that great.
Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney)
Life – David Attenborough (BBC)
Life – Oprah Winfrey (BBC)
Absolute Power (Warner)
Heartbreak Ridge (Warner)
The Rookie – 1990 (Warner)
Bad Boys (Sony)
Wild Things: Foursome (Sony)
Undisputed III: Redemption (New Line)
War of the Worlds (DreamWorks)
Class of Nuke ‘Em High (Troma)
Tromeo and Juliet (Troma)
Someone’s Knocking at the Door (Vicious Circle)

While we absolutely adore our Nexus One — now that it’s got a bellyful of that fabulous frozen yogurt — one of the most exciting Android additions shown off at Google I/O isn’t actually slated for Froyo: the ability to push apps and music over the air from computer to phone. The underlying framework apparently is, though, and thus a bite-sized version of the functionality is already available at Google Code. If you’re one of the lucky few running Android 2.2, you can get an extension for Chrome and Firefox web browsers that will let you push URLs, Maps and YouTube video links direct to your device using a Google Account. You can think of it as an early foray into a Continuous Client, perhaps, sharing with yourself before you head to a business meeting. Better yet, share an account with a group of friends and push interesting items to everyone on the go. See how (and see it in action) right after the break.
