It is expected that around 5 million Britons will go online on Christmas Day and spent more than $232 million in an attempt to beat price increases, which will follow in January.

According to a report by IMRG, the industry body for Internet retailers in the U.K., around 4.8 million consumers will access the Internet on Christmas Day and spend a record amount of around $232 million on online shopping.

The report claimed that online sales surged an average of 22.5% year-on-year in October and December. Although deliveries have been affected in recent months by bad weather, IMRG are certain that shoppers will not be put off.

IMRG said in a statement that Christmas Day has become a very busy online shopping day. They also said that weather impacts in the U.K. may contribute towards an increased online shopping experience in the next few weeks.

The predictions comes as good news to the many online retailers, especially after the recent financial difficulties experienced by consumers due to the world-wide recession.
