Only few hours ago Microsoft has unveiled updated versions of its “leaner and meaner and superhero-meets-supermodel” famous tablets at an event in New York: the Surface RT and the Surface Pro tablet PCs.
The cheaper model, (Surface 2) offered by Redmond company has a few improvements over its previous model, and Surface Pro 2, is targeted mostly at professionals, who needs a really powerful laptop alike PC in a touch-centric tablet form factor.
The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 designs look very similar (if not the same) to the original Surface slates released a year ago (June 2012), and even there is not much has been changed (only new kickstand in the Surface Pro 2), both of the tablets have more powerful specs and new accessories.
There was a number of new accessories presented at the launch event including the new Music Kit accessory, new Power Cover, which has an additional battery that can double slate’s battery life, the new Surface Docking Station with multiple outlets and a few more. The Surface 2 main features:
- super-fast NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor
- Built-in kickstand (with 2 positions)
- long lasting battery – up to 10 hours
- Widescreen 1080p HD display
- Full-size USB 3.0
- microSD reader
- Windows 8.1
- the price is $449.00
The Surface Pro 2 main features look similar, but have more powerful Intel Haswell CPU, up to 500 GB SSD drive, up to 8GB of low-power DDR RAM, and will cost you $899 for all those extras. It will have 4 GB of RAM in 64GB and 128GB models and you will get 8GB RAM with 256GB and 512GB models.
Microsoft claims that Surface Pro 2 will have 60% better battery life on its business device, however i think it depends on so many factors that we will hear more stories about that claim.
I will skip all the digital goodies coming together with Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 (like 200GB of Skydrive storage and the like), cause it may probably vary depending on your location (not sure though), but both tablets are available for pre-order starting tomorrow and shipments will start from October the 22-th accordingly.
